thoughts on art

Isn’t life lovely when you look at it, just right, or crooked, or without your eyes at all?

My art is what’s going on in and outside of my head. How I see the world and what I’m doing in it. My images are about emotions, moments, relationships, past and current states of existence, denial and delusion, dreams and believing. I look at the small moments, and expressions in people that are universal, but tell a story distinctly their own.

I fell in love with the immediacy and unique visual depth of one-of-a-kind oil monotypes in university. They provided a freeness and uncertainty that balanced the precision of studying graphic design. There is a serendipity to the process, the moment when I have to turn over control to the press, and let the universe finish what I’ve created.

Through figurative abstract expressionism, I utilize vibrant colors and subjects that range from austere and contemplative to whimsical and curious. My tall, slender figures represent an individual’s place in their existence — like a single line on a vast space. I try to capture moments and gestures that live beyond the edge of the paper, letting the viewer find their own story in how I’ve interpreted the world.
